Mysteries of Table Etiquette of the 18–19 Centuries 10+

Guided gathering in a lecture format

Flying tables, wine fountains, and pies with butterflies — how did hosts impress their guests?

This lecture is not about modern etiquette, but about amusing, surprising, and sometimes curious moments from the lives of the nobility. You will not be taught how to sit properly at the table. Instead, you will be shown mysterious objects that are no longer in use, told stories about the most beautiful and unusual tableware, and given the opportunity to examine them closely.

During the lecture, you will learn:
• the contrast between Russian and French styles of serving
• what guests carried away in their pockets after dinners at the Winter Palace
• how not to embarrass yourself with a napkin
• the “king” of desserts and refined utensils
• original tableware for men
• glamorous accessories for fashion-conscious ladies
• dining dress code: bold necklines, grandmother’s fan, or family jewels

Additionally,

“1,000 and 1 Fork” — the most enjoyable part of the program.
Especially for you, the guide will bring genuine antique table-setting items from a personal collection. Traditionally, neither the names nor the purposes of these objects will be revealed — you will have to guess! Fortunately, everything can be examined in detail. This is where the real fun begins, as guests often come up with the most unexpected ideas about how these antique items were used.
