We invite you to journey into the world of a medieval woman and, through the example of a tsar’s daughter, bride, or wife, imagine what it was like to be a noblewoman in the Russian Tsardom. You will learn about the lifestyle of a wealthy Muscovite woman and the fate of tsars’ wives, and we will also discuss the first Russian tsar, Ioann — a bloodthirsty despot or a tragic figure?
During the lecture, we will: • see what the tsar and the ladies of his court really looked like • determine how many wives Ivan the Terrible actually had and whom he loved most • calculate how long Ivan Vasilyevich’s shortest marriage lasted • learn how the tsar sought to marry the English queen • discuss table etiquette in the Tsardom of Russia • explain how Ivan IV’s marriage to a provincial woman affected him • learn what tsars’ wives did in luxurious palace “cages” • explore royal amusements, feasts, and entertainment • and much more from the medieval life of the royal court
